Anses d'Arlet

Two-week roadtrip in Martinique

Martinique is maybe not the most famous island in the Caribbean, but that’s one more reason to go! I was there in early November and I enjoyed most beaches and walks on my own.

Day 1-3: South West of the island

  • Breakfast on the beach of Anse à l’Ane
  • Walk down the pier in Anses d’Arlet and snorkel to see turtles or walk to Grand Anse on the morne Champagne
  • Eat in ‘TI Payot in Grand Anse
  • Go and admire the view on the Rocher du Diamant
  • Visit the Memorial 110 at Anse Caffard

Day 4-7: Sainte-Anne

  • Climb up behind the Sainte-Anne church for a view on the bay
  • Walk from Sainte Anne to the Salines via Anse Meunier and take the bus back
  • Climb up the Piton Crève Coeur for a beautiful view at 360 degrees
  • Walk from Salines to the Savane des pétrifications (preferably not alone), come back and enjoy the sunset in the Salines
  • Eat the best accras with locals at Lamartine in Sainte-Anne

Day 8-10 : La Caravelle

  • On the way from Sainte-Anne to Trinité, do a very nice loop walk on The Vauclin peninsula
  • Go on a cruise to see Les Fonds Blancs – I did the excursion with Ballades de Delphis – a bit more expensive but the boat was gorgeous)
  • Explore the Caravalle peninsula, a breathtaking walk among different landscapes

Day 11: Grand Rivière

  • Enjoy the black sand of the Sinai beach on the northern tip of Guadeloupe while looking at Dominica
  • Leave your car here, do a day walk to Anse Couleuvre and come back by boat
    • If you don’t want to do the full walk, go up (and down) the narrow road to Anse Couleuvre and loop for tarantulas on the way to the waterfall
  • Eat and sleep at Tante Arlette in Grand Rivière

Day 12-14: Le Carbet

  • On the way from Grand Rivière, stop at the Gorges de la Falaise to walk in cold water between the rocks to a nice waterfall (not too hard, don’t worry!)
  • Go for a drink on the beach with a few on the volcano at La Vague in Saint-Pierre
  • Explore the beautiful gardens of the Domaine de l’Emeraude
  • Beach day in Le Carbet and sunset at Wahoo Café

As regards accommodation, besides the hotel in Grand Rivière, I booked many nice flats:

  • Anse à l’Ane: crazy view on the capital city bay
  • Sainte-Anne: super large flat with a perfectly positioned terrace
  • Tartane: basically on the beach, I could have stayed there forever
  • Le Carbet: large apartment with stunning seaviewsI got my car from Jumbo for a very good price – 231€ for 14 days. The roads are full of holes so if you don’t want to stress out during the trip, I’d recommend you take an extra insurance.

Other things to do:

  • I avoided the capital city Fort-de-France as this was not was I looking for but may be worth a visit if you have more time
  • Climb up the Montagne Pelée and Morne Larcher if you are not travelling alone
  • Explore the Jardin de Balata

All recommendations are mine, no ads.
Trip done in November 2025.
